If you're buying supplements in the Netherlands or anywhere in the EU, you're operating in one of the most tightly regulated markets in the world. That's a good thing — but it also means you need to understand what those standards require.
How EU supplement regulation works
Supplements sold in the EU fall under the Food Supplements Directive (2002/46/EC) and are evaluated by EFSA — the European Food Safety Authority. Health claims must be pre-approved based on scientific evidence. Claims like "builds muscle" or "burns fat" require regulatory backing.
What this means for athletes
Products available in the EU have passed a stricter baseline than products sold in less regulated markets. Brands operating legitimately cannot make the aggressive claims that appear on American supplements. If you see extreme health claims on a product sold in the Netherlands, it's worth questioning whether the brand is operating within EU guidelines.
What to look for as a buyer
• Full ingredient and dose transparency — no proprietary blends
• Manufacturing to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards
• Clear labelling in the language of the market it's sold in
• No health claims that exceed what EFSA has approved
